The new owners passed around lease notices today, which either meant they didn't get permission to convert the apartment to condos or it's going to take a while.

The DREADFUL news is that, if I sign a lease, my rent is going up $155 PER MONTH!!!

The WORSE news is that, if I DON'T sign a lease, my rent is going up $455 PER MONTH!!!

$1,250 with a lease.

$1,550 without a lease.

For a two-bedroom, one-bath apartment.

And, you know what's sad?

That's a bargain.

Sigh.

Off to cry.

Oh that's terrible!

*hugs*

Similar things happen here in Florida, because of the monstrous increase in our insurance rates thanks to all the hurricanes. I wish there was an easy answer, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Oh, I can understand about the insurance rates there. The storms have been bad lately.

No, never any easy answers, but I guess it keeps life interesting?

The rent is that high in the valley? oh crap. Any more rent raises and I'll be moving to North Dakota. *sigh* much empathy....

In the San Gabriel Valley.

And, my apartment is only like 850 square feet!

I had a friend who moved down here from Chicago who thought she was getting a deal paying (if I recall) 600 or more a month... a couple of blocks away from the place I used to live that charged 399.

Mind you, I'm only paying 355 now and I still get free cable.

Mind you, I live in a converted hotel by the interstate.

Thanks to the beginning "correction" in the housing market, a fair number of condo units may be available for rent at relatively low rates.

Till then -- you have my sympathy.

That would be a bargain in Boston, too. Which is why I left there. Good luck!

yep......

Holy crap. That's *almost* what we pay for our monthly mortgage in the SFV. And when we looked at apartments before househunting, we figured it would cost just as much to own as to rent.

That's incredible for an 850 sf apt.

Oh crap... I'm sorry to hear that. That's a high rent even in NY (obviously you're getting more for your money, though). I'm sure you'll get by, but it sure makes it harder. Good luck...

OMG. That thud you heard was my jaw hitting the floor.

I'm so sorry. Will virtual chocolate help?

Wow, that is scary money.

Move here, you can rent a huge house with a pool in the suburbs for that kind of money.

*grin*

EEEWWW!!! Poor thing, you have my sympathies.
There should be a law against charging that kind of rent for a dinky APARTMENT. I mean, it's an apartment for cryin' out loud.
We're getting socked with big rental increases up here too (not like yours) but still a big jump.

Sooo glad I live in South Dakota. We have the same apartment square footage and set-up (2 bed, one bath), and we're paying $550 a month.

What scares me is that our housing market is climbing into 1000 range for apartments here, and how the heck does ARKANSAS justify that? I remember my trips to Cali and the coworkers out there asking what I paid in rent... at the time $600 for a 3 bedroom, about 1100 sq ft. It meant a commute every day to live that cheaply, but what Californian doesn't have a commute? ;-)

Sorry to hear yours is going up... Maybe with the leases, they'll start fixing stuff? They'd just about have to, wouldn't they?

Yikes! I'm really sorry to hear about the rent increase. Hang in there. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Don't you wonder sometimes why we stay in California? It's absurdly expensive here, renting or owning, and there's simply nothing to do for it.

Hang in there!
