Did I do a stupid thing?

Remember I got bitten on the chin by my cat?

Remember I went to the emergency room and got powerful antibiotics?

Well, I finished the prescription last Friday and had the suspicion that there was still part of one of the little abcesses there.

Guess what? There was.

It was a little bigger today, so I poked at it like the doctor did and...

It popped.

Had a little hard center and some goo. Nothing huge. Only a little blood. It was just a little guy.

I've washed it several times. I've medicated it and covered it until morning.

Was I stupid to pop it?

Or good to clean it out?

I figured I'd keep an eye on it until I get paid Friday and then decide if I needed to go to the doctor or not.

Naw, clean is good. You'd only be worried about septicemia if you hadn't cleaned the wound afterwards.

No, it was good to pop it and clean it. They pop on their own anyway.
Get some antibiotic ointment and keep it clean and you should be just fine.

What to watch for is more swelling, redness, excess warmth and red streaks.

All I know is, with rabbits we used to use a razor blade, lots of peroxide, and antibiotic gel afterwards. I use the same technique on the cats.

I know, I know, this is why you don't come to me for medical advice.

Oh, but the lump on Rude's tail went away without the need for that intervention. I am pleased.

Not a doc by any stretch of the imagination, but I would probably have done the same thing. Think of it as keeping the gunk out of a wound. Just make sure you put betadine or something on, and keep an eye on it.

I agree with the above, it's best to get it drained and cleaned out. You used antiseptic, so no worries about reinfection. It should heal fine :)

Cleaning it out is good. If I were you, I'd keep cleaning it with peroxide or betadine or some other germ-killing product until it heals. Think of it as a cat-inflicted zit. :-)

But then I'm both accident-prone and doctor-phobic, so I tend to my own wounds when perhaps I shouldn't...

I spent 5 days in the hospital with an abcess I had to have surgery on. My advice? Go back to the doctor and let him look at it.
