Well, I'm violating the rules and actually bringing a plot to the table, but since I need the kick in the pants on this deadline that NaNo would provide, I figure it's a good fit. :)
bringing a plot to the table is not violating the rules. (in fact, it's encouraged!) only bringing "pre-existing as of 1nov" wordcount to the table is. ;)
Just remember, you're not writing 50K words, you're writing 1700 words a day. Suddenly it's not so overwhelming. Plus, you'll have 51K when you're done... or more. I've done it 5 yrs and finished 4 of those years.
1700 words a day keeps you typing but not crazy -- or too crazy!
I had a friend who tried to edit while doing this and she finally gave up. Seems she wanted to change a character's name about 15K in -- I told her to just make a note in CAPS where she changed it and to go back AFTER she was done but use the new name from that point on. She couldn't which indicated to me that she was going back reading what she had for ontinuity. DON'T.
You typed it, it's gone, don't worry about it -- there's more words coming down the track and you gotta get them on paper (or cyberspace).
Don't ever edit -- besides, putting notes in the document to go back and fix this or that adds more words to your count. Sort of cheating, but not really. [g]
if you change your mind while you're writing something, don't go back and erase. use strikethrough instead. then your "old" words will still count towards wordcount!
and that tip came from chris baty himself, years ago. ;)
do NOT sacrifice sleep in the name of nanowrimo, no matter how good an idea it may seem to stay up that extra hour or two. your body will thank you later.
Start off with a PARTAY and sugar. That's what I'm doing with my writer's club kids (high school) this year, tomorrow. I know it's one day early, but it's the day we meet, so...nachos, cookies, and sequined masks I bought for them at the dollar store. Yeah, that's it, wear a mask!
