What is your favorite scent of Spring?

What's the most prominent scent in the air in your area when Spring arrives?

What's blooming right now? What's the first thing to bloom?

I'm going gah-gah over orange blossoms right now because I think that's one of the most beautiful smells around. And, it just popped up suddenly, in my area, yesterday. (Orange trees are NOT the first thing to bloom. In fact, I think things bloom ALL YEAR ROUND here!)

Needless to say, I was in heaven, driving with car windows down, sucking those orange blossoms into my lungs.

They made me sniffle, cause I am allergy-prone. But, it didn't diminish my pleasure any at all.

I love orange blossoms! I visited my family in Riverside about this time a few years ago, and I couldn't stop smelling them.

Up here, it's still too cold for anything to happen. Boo.

I used to love the smell of soggy ground and moisture-laden air and over-full, muddy creeks in West Virginia in the spring. Every thaw, we'd get that smell and damp, cool-but-not-cold air.

The nice thing was, it thawed like that multiple times before the REAL thaw in March... WV is pretty mild in the winter, so we had many nice days even in January and February.

I actually miss the spring up there. Here it's kind of anti-climactic because we don't really have a winter, just a long fall that starts turning into spring in February.

What is your favorite scent of Spring?

Fresh mulch (because it happens first).

What's the most prominent scent in the air in your area when Spring arrives?

Fresh damp plants in general.

What's blooming right now? What's the first thing to bloom?

Right now: forsythia; jonquils; narcissus; something that looks like a grape hyacinth, only pink and much bigger
First thing: snowdrops; winter pansies (never really stopped blooming)

Lilac. (-:

Nothing's blooming here yet, since we're still getting down into the 20s overnight, but I don't think it'll be too much longer. Nothing's even more than a half-inch out of the ground yet, but a few sunny days will get them rolling quickly .

My favorite scent is freshly cut grass.

My least favorite is dog crap. lol. Once the snow starts melting, a winter's worth of it is suddenly exposed to the sun, and man, it's awful. When you're out walking, even if you can't see any visible evidence that a house has a dog living in it, you'll usually smell it.

There's nothing blooming right now... It's barely getting into the 30s during the day, so it'll be awhile before that happens. And I'm not sure what blooms first. All I know is that the first thing /I/ notice are the dandelions. ;) Ha.

Ah spring. We open our windows and breathe deep of the fumes of the dog food factory and the breeze from the lake-- in all its muddy churned up bottom dead brine shrimp glory.

I have orange blossoms!!! I love them. (I like lilacs too, but it doesn't get cold enough here for them.)

I have a meadow full of wildflowers (blackberry blossoms, Saponaria, Queen Annes Lace, Anise, lupine and California Poppies) right here, but they don't have as strong a scent as the orange blossoms. I'll post a pic on the weekend probably. (I have to get the camera back from my dad)

I also love the smell right before it rains. That sharp scent of electricity, water and earth.

but it's not blooming right now.

nothing is blooming right now.

if spring is mild, we might get green budding on the trees before the 1st of may, but generally not until after the 1st of may.

The first trees to bloom in Kentucky are the pear trees, and the blooming trees are what you notice first on your drive through wherever. Lovely white blossoms that, in two to three weeks, will be swirling like snow through the air at the first strong breeze, making it look like winter all over again.

The first flowers that bloom in my garden are the crocuses, then the hyacinths, and then the daffodils. There's usually a short wait for the bluebells and tulips to start to open to the sun, which is when the cherry trees start to bloom. By the time the apple trees are blossoming, the irises are on their way, though they won't be in full bloom until late April. At that time, the hawthorn tree in my yard will start its flowering. The hawthorn blooms are heavy, musky and sweet, thick with the promise of a humid summer.
