Or, at least smarter than yesterday.

I'm having a bowl of Irish oatmeal before I leave for work. Then, I'm taking something small to have at work with my meds.

This way, no sick today.

Way smarter than me. I had cookies for breakfast.

But that's still smarter than not eating anything at all before work, AND forgetting to bring anything for lunch, which I did yesterday.

Funny how it's so hard to be smart about things like that some days, huh?

I used to skip meals and grab whatever was handy...and I'm sure that's part of why I became diabetic. I was always on the go, always rushing, always stressed, didn't have time to eat right.

Now, I try really hard to be good. I'm not a health nut or anything, but I try to reach for something good, when I can and, of course, eat only things with sugar substitute.

But, I understand what you mean about just having to grab something. Understand it lots.

Yeah, some days, it's hard to remember the important things. Why do you think that is?

What's the difference between Irish oats and the regular kind? I keep seeing them in the store and wondering.

I know that the Irish are steel cut. What that means, I have no clue, but they have this rich, kind of nutty flavor that's EXCELLENT!

thanks to alton brown, i know what this means! yay alton!

"steel cut" means that's the point in the process where they stop: they go through one or two two fewer steps than the "Quaker rolled oats" variety, i.e. they don't get smushed and flattened. they take far longer--about 35min--to cook, and (as you know, but [livejournal.com profile] resar doesn't) their texture and flavor is very different.

texture-wise they're more crunchy, kindof as if they have loads of chopped-up walnuts in them. flavor-wise they're nutty because they're that much closer to the whole grain.

This is a good kind of smart.

For me, the big one lately is remembering to drink water. I feel nasty enough these days without additionally feeling dehydrated, and how hard is it to get a glass of water? And yet I forget.

And healthy, cause the oatmeal fights cholesterol build-up and I use non-cholesterol margarine in it.

I'm even going to take some to work for break later.

It's hard to remember to drink water when you're busy. It's hard to remember, in fact, unless you're actually thirsty. Have you tried keeping a bottle of water in sight all the time?

I am a relentless tidier. So I would chug the water and recycle the bottle and end up spending all day in the bathroom and have to deal with either buying new water or washing and filling water bottles a good deal more often than my hydration really requires.
