Is it Fall Yet?
Sep. 27th, 2005 07:59 amWhat's it like where you live? Is it fall yet? Summer? Indian Summer?
I'm yearning for fall. We had another mini heat wave. Only up to 90, but, still, we'd had lovely 79-82 degree weather over the past week or so. And rain!
We usually have a heat wave (100 degree weather) and brush fires in October. However, we rarely (if ever) have rain in September, which we had last week, so maybe things won't be dry enough to burn.
I grew up in Tennessee, and lived there until I was 25, so I still miss having a real fall every year. Fall is my favorite time of year. I loved the leaves turning, the temps dropping (we used to call it football weather), the crip smell to the air.
What's fall like in your area? What are the sights and the sounds and the smells? How does the world around you change? Does it change?
I'm just curious today about what other parts of the country/world are experiencing since fall officially arrived last week.

Date: 2005-09-27 03:21 pm (UTC)today, it might even snow.
Is it fall yet?
Date: 2005-09-27 03:41 pm (UTC)The past few years haven't been as colorful because of a drought we were experiencing. (You need moisture for the trees to have such gorgeous colors.) So this year fall has been great!
I'm always sad to see the end of the long summer days, because it means winter is on the horizon. But with the beautiful deep blue skies and the color in the mountains, it helps me realize that there is more to Utah than winter, although it would be nice to get the cold weather over with in six weeks (around December).
Unfortunately, that's not the case. The season that is really short here is spring. We can go from spring to summer in a week (and have some lovely flooding, provided we have snow in the mountains.)
Summers are hot and occasionally very hot and also way to short and with little rain. Then it is time to harvest the fruit and vegetables and I wonder why I dreading the fall, when each beatifull day is like a gift to savor until the first winter snow falls.

Date: 2005-09-27 03:43 pm (UTC)Yesterday's thunderstorm struck outta the blue. No, really. Blue sky outside the window and shazam! lightning bolt and a drenching rain. Passed quickly but still refreshing.

Date: 2005-09-27 04:05 pm (UTC)I wanted a thunderstorm yesterday. We were supposed to have one. My kids said it drizzled at school, but I didn't even see a drop here at work. :(
I love thunderstorms.
Was yours a good one?

Date: 2005-09-27 06:25 pm (UTC)This morning I scraped frost off the windshield, but today is a glorious fall day. Blue sky and no wind. I want a month of these.

Date: 2005-09-27 08:18 pm (UTC)There are a few leaves starting to turn, and fields are growing more golden in hue, but it doesn't yet feel "fall-like". Rumor has it that we're going to get our first frost later this week, but that next week it'll be warm and sunny again (yay!). Most of the flowers in the garden are long since done, except the mums which'll want planting very soon if I'm to get them to come back next year. Harvest is done; the field down the street is now bare except for a few long rows of pumpkins and many big crates loaded up with winter squash waiting to go off to market.
Looking now out my office window out over the northern part of the valley the dominant color is still a deep green, but I can see one or two trees getting a jump on the rest, little anomalous blocks of red out in the distance. Like a pox, it will spread until my beautiful forests are red and yellow and brown, and then buried in white until we've forgotten what summer meant.
I live in NJ and it's......

Date: 2005-09-28 02:38 pm (UTC)I'm in Johannesburg, and officially it's spring, but the weather has been blindingly hot. The soil in my garden is cracked, and nothing wants to grow. *very sad face* It's been 25 degrees for days, and then today was 18. I just don't get that.
I hope we get plenty of rain this summer, because if it's this hot now, then I shall be nothing more than a puddle of sweat in a few months time.
