Not Something You Want to Wake Up To In the Middle of the Night

The smell of fresh skunk outside.

Bleh.

It's times like these that I rethink the whole sleeping with my window open thing.

But, I like the fresh air...especially after all the heat of summer.

And, at least it wasn't RIGHT outside my window this time, cause my eyes didn't burn.

Sometimes, the little fellow wanders around right outside.

Oldest son ran into him one night in August while he was taking the trash out at midnight one weekend.

He left the skunk alone and the skunk left him alone and they both went about their merry ways, thank heavens.

No skunk in the air this morning. Only damp eucalyptus. That's MUCH nicer, believe me.

I think I'm the only one on the planet who'd prefer the skunk to the eucalyptus; skunk just smells bad, but eucalyptus still reminds me (almost ten years later) of the night I rolled my car off the side of the 405.

I can't smell skunk. When people complain about skink smell, all I can smell is a faint tinge of something like burning rubber - if I can smell anything at all, which I usually don't. Well, you're a writer - how would you describe the smell?

I think when it's at a distance, or fading, it smells like burning rubber. My oldest son and I have discussed this on many occasions.

It's only nearby that it burns the eyes and, gee, I don't know how I'd describe the smell. Next time it happens, I'll come up with a writerly description and post it. :)
