The Physics of Worldbuilding

Oldest son and I went out to breakfast this morning.

Mmmmmmm....chorizo.

We were there almost TWO HOURS.

No, we weren't eating that long.

We were discussing the physics inherent in specialty worldbuilding.

I have specific characteristics built into the universe of my series. I have a specific way the universe was created and evolved. Specific functions that I need in my worlds in order for everything to be coherent and cohesive.

So, periodically, oldest and I have marathon brainstorming sessions, where we figure out what circumstances had to have been present to cause certain events to happen and what conditions must continue to be present to keep the universe stable (or what can destabilize it when the need arises) and enable certain circumstances to survive and thrive.

We theorize together and then he writes out the equations necessary to support or disprove these environments. Today, he even drew me graphs and explained the fuctions of them and how they explained what I'd created.

When something doesn't work in a logical manner, I tweak and he figures again until we can either prove it or come to a satisfying "man doesn't know enough about that YET, but yes, in theory, it would work" scenario.

Often, when we reach that second option, I can continue down the creational trail until I reach another aspect that will actually go back and modify its origin into a logical explanation.

It's soooo satisfying to actually be able to explain the universe, the worlds, and how things work.

It makes writing easier because I have a framework in which everything fits. No, not every aspect of my universe is included in every story, but it still enables me to have control over it, make the stories flow in a logical manner, and it gives me the total knowledge I need to make all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Now...

I'm off to write 30 pages of screenplay before 6:00 this evening.
