Had my first big disaster of 2006.
Stressed a while. Too tired to stress any more. Going to sleep for now. (I hope.)

Date: 2006-01-06 01:37 pm (UTC)I called them and they told me an address to send a copy of it too. I had until the end of November to do this.
AND I DID!!!
Yesterday, I get a letter from them saying that I hadn't filed a 2002 tax return, so they were filing one for me. They didn't allow any deductions or exemptions or allowances and credits for my kids or purchase of my hybrid that year...NOTHING.
Plus, they added about $10,000-$12,000 in penalities, interest, late filing fees, etc.
$25,000+ total that they want me to pay!!!
I'm going to dig up that address again and send ANOTHER copy to it CERTIFIED MAIL, RETURN RECEIPT, and then call to see if anything can be worked out.
I owed NO taxes for that year. None at all!!!
However, the big problem is that once they take a big action like this, they usually want you to PAY IT OFF and then file an AMENDED return and they'll refund what you paid.
Hell. I can't afford that. Bleh.

Date: 2006-01-06 07:24 pm (UTC)My sister read your comments and wanted me to advise you. As a former IRS employee I can tell you a few things to try to get this resolved as quick as possible. To freeze activity on your account you should call 1-866-860-4259. This is the IRS help line. Have your notices handy and explain the problem (you have a missing tax return for 2002 and that you did file). They should be able to check what is happening and at the very least you can have them put a hold on your account. Also, if you go to www.irs.gov, you can click on Individuals, scroll down. On the left side of the screen you will see a link to "Contact My Local Office". Click on that and you should be able to find the nearest office. If you go to one, you should take all of your information (copies of return & notices). When you visit a local office you can walk in, sit down and discuss the problem. Please email me at excann13@relia.net if you have questions. Hope this helps!
