My New Doctor was a Freak
Oct. 12th, 2005 05:56 amBut, before you get me wrong, I say that with all the sincerest admiration. :)
He was a real trip. I can honestly tell you I've never run across a doctor like that before. He spent an entire HOUR with me, which I can't say a doctor has ever done before. Of course, I was his last patient of the day, but by the time we were finished, the people at the desk and most of the nurses were gone and the lights in the waiting room were off!
He was funny, but laughed at a lot of his own jokes until he couldn't talk. Kind of odd, but nice and funny odd. He liked to talk politics and country music, when he found out I was born in Nashville.
Even more impressive was the fact that he reads EXTENSIVELY...very well-read and could discuss what he'd read...and he loves science fiction. So, that won me over right away, of course. :)
He was honest. I thought it was going to be scary, at first, when he walked in, looked at my chart and said, "Well, genetically, you're not designed to live past 60." But, then he went on to say that with modern medicine, taking care of myself, blah-blah-blah, the goal was to live to 90. (At which point, I wanted to say, "Well, maybe 90 is TOO long, unless I still have certain capabilities left.)
He was just the opposite of my last doctor. He admired my last blood work numbers and how they'd dropped to half of what my numbers were before I started taking meds and watching diet. He said he was amazed I was able to control blood sugar and blood pressure on only three meds. Talked to me about side effects. Talked to me about exercise.
And, when I asked him about seeing a dietician to make sure I was eating correctly, he said I didn't need one and gave me two great little books that he said would tell me everything I needed to know. Boy, did they ever turn what the other doctor had told me upside down.
There are so fewer restrictions than I'd been led to believe...though there are some things that I should do more in moderation, too. All in all, not quite so horrible at all. I don't even have to shun sugar completely, though I probably will continue to do so anyway, because I'm very happy without sodas and candy and empty calories that have sugar. Very content now that I'm used to it. But, I was THRILLED to discover that I am encouraged to eat fruits for the fiber. The other doctor told me I could NOT have fruit.
Anyway, enough rambling. I think daughter is FINALLY ready, so we can leave.
I had my organic maple pork sausages for breakfast this morning and, OMG, they were to die for!!! I couldn't imagine what the difference in taste would be. They were sooooo much better than meat from the grocery store. Absolutely wonderful!!!
Hope everyone has a great day today!!! It's Wednesday already!!! Hooray!
Oh, oh...and one more thing about the doctor. This guy gave me SIX MONTHS worth of refills on my prescriptions!!! Other doctor never gave me more than a month or two.

Date: 2005-10-12 03:08 pm (UTC)It's good that you can have fruit, fruit makes things worthwhile. A friend's step sister is diabetic and she was encouraged to eat fruit (but that may have been instead of snacking on sweets and putting her life at risk, she was rather foolhardy :P)

Date: 2005-10-12 03:39 pm (UTC)I don't understand why the previous doctor banned FRUIT. I've been encouraged to eat fruit, in moderation, by every doc I've had (including my endocrinologist), but to avoid fruit JUICE. The natural sugars are too concentrated in juice, even the ones like Juicy Juice that don't add sweetening. They can spike your sugar levels unnecessarily, and often give you a "rush headache" afterwards like a soda can. My endo said 4oz of fruit juice per day was okay, but to combine it with a protein serving to help boost the body's utilization of the natural sugars.

Date: 2005-10-12 04:32 pm (UTC)I am very glad that you have a good doctor who is working with you with your situation. It sounds similar to my mother's issue (though I'm not sure about the CHF) and I know how hard it is to keep HPB and blood sugar issues under control.
