Has It Really Been That Long?
Aug. 1st, 2005 06:28 amFor all you folks that get squicked by maternal reminiscing, avoid this post, even though it should be short and sweet. I don't indulge in it often, but today seems like the day for it.
Today is my youngest son's birthday. He's 14. He starts high school in the fall.
I can't help but think back over all the things that have happened in that period of time.
While I was pregnant with him, my husband argued with his boss, got fired, and we ended up on welfare. My husband refused to work and refused to watch the kids so I could work. We stayed on welfare for four years. The only work I could do was as an aide at an elementary school because I couldn't find any help for child care and welfare didn't provide it at that point.
I left my husband, who was abusive, when my youngest son was four. Best move I ever made. Struggled for a number of years after that, but ultimately moved back to CA, ended up as Controller for the company I still work for (in spite of the old owner), and have never looked back since.
Kids have grown into good people. Smart people. Responsible and respectable people.
I am a very happy mom. :)
Wow...has it really been fourteen years already???
